Carpet Beetle Treatment

Carpet beetles are one of the most common and underestimated fabric pests in the UK. It is the larvae — not the adult beetles — that cause the damage, feeding on natural fibres in carpets, clothing, upholstery, and stored textiles. Early identification and treatment is essential to prevent widespread destruction.

What's Involved

1

Inspection & Identification

We inspect affected rooms thoroughly — lifting edges of carpets, checking wardrobes, airing cupboards, and loft spaces where bird nests can be a source of infestation. We confirm the species and assess the extent of the problem, distinguishing carpet beetle damage from moth damage, which requires a different treatment approach.

2

Residual Insecticide Treatment

We apply a professional residual insecticide spray to carpet edges, skirting boards, under furniture, and any other areas where larvae are active or likely to harbour. Treatment targets both larvae and adult beetles. Hard-to-reach areas such as loft spaces or sub-floor voids are treated where necessary.

3

Advice & Follow-Up

We advise on housekeeping measures that support the treatment — regular vacuuming of edges and under furniture, airing and cleaning stored clothing, and removing bird or animal nest material from loft spaces and eaves, which is a common re-infestation source.

Signs You Have a Problem

  • Irregular bare patches or thinning in natural-fibre carpets, particularly along edges and in darker, less-trafficked areas — carpet beetle damage tends to form a scattered, random pattern rather than the more regular "tracking" lines caused by moth larvae
  • Small holes or surface grazing in wool, cashmere, or other natural-fibre clothing and blankets, especially in items stored for long periods
  • Shed larval skins — small, brown, bristly casings — found in carpet edges, drawer corners, or behind furniture
  • Small oval beetles, around 2-4mm long, often seen near windows in late spring or early summer as adults emerge and seek to fly outdoors
  • Damage to taxidermy, natural bristle brushes, feather items, or dried flower arrangements, which can all harbour and sustain carpet beetle populations
